It is important to know the nature of any stain, and, before preparing to remove it, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is it a water-based stain? If so, water will remove it.
  2. Is the stain alcohol? If so, then alcohol will remove it (e.g., tincture of iodine).
  3. Is the stain acid? If so, use an alkali to neutralize it.
  4. Is the stain grease? If so, use soap to remove it.
  5. Does the stain contain albumin (milk or blood)? If so, do not use a hot solution since it will cook the albumin.
